Recueillir des textes, plonger dans cette matière qui appartint à une période si précise de notre Histoire (de 1715 à 1723, de la mort de Louis XIV à l'avènement de Louis XV), c'est pour Michel Chaillou, écrivain d'aujourd'hui, l'occasion de s'interroger : le temps qui passe ainsi, sous la Régence de Philippe d'Orléans, passe-t-il en entier? Un siècle s'éclipse-t-il totalement des mots qui le parlèrent? l'écrivirent? Mathurin de Lignac, pharmacien à Pont-Sainte- Maxence, qui en ce début du XVIIIe disserte sur la génération des insectes dans le corps, acquiert-il un style à appartenir à une époque révolue? Ou est-ce elle qui !ui en prête? Le temps serait-il écrivain?
L'auteur de cette anthologie a appelé « prose courante » cette dentelle du temps qui se fabrique ainsi à l'insu du brodeur : voyageurs, cuisiniers, petites gens des villages, marquis éclairés, botanistes, thérapeutes, géographes, auteurs de traités, cultivateurs, accoucheurs, artificiers, rêveurs, tous brodent sans le savoir cette étrange nappe de temps. Au demeurant, la Petite Vertu était vers 1715 le nom d'une papeterie très fréquentée, propriétaire un certain Guyot, rue des Assis ou des Arcis, engloutie avec son cortège d'enseignes du côté de l'église Saint-Merri. |
